Islamorada's History and Wild Side, From One Beachfront House
If you want to spend a week on the old wrecking islands and the fossil-reef trails of the Upper Keys, and you need three bedrooms to do it, the short answer is The Oasis. It's our beachfront estate in the heart of downtown Islamorada, three bedrooms across two homes, sleeping up to eight. The reason it works for this particular trip isn't the pool. It's that four kayaks and two paddleboards come with the house, and in this stretch of the Keys the history is mostly offshore, reachable by small boat.
That's the thing people don't realise until they get here. Islamorada's past isn't arranged along the highway with parking lots. The nineteenth-century settlement sits on an island you have to paddle to. The botanical hammock with the old Matheson house on it is boat-access only. So the gear in the garage ends up shaping the itinerary more than the guidebook does.
The history here floats offshore
Start with Indian Key Historic State Park, an eleven-acre island off Islamorada where a nineteenth-century wrecking settlement once stood, with stores, dwellings, warehouses and wharves. It was the original seat of Dade County, settled in 1836, and what survives is the street grid and the ruins. Access runs from around Mile Marker 78.5 on US 1. Since late 2021 the island has been reachable by kayak launch only, the boat ramp at Indian Key Fill closed after storm damage, and the observation tower closed too. Check that status before you go, because it has been in place a while and may or may not still be.
Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, on the bay side at MM 78.5, is the other one you reach by water. Dense with endangered plants and protected birds, and the historic Matheson home sits in the middle of it. Florida Keys Boat Rentals at Robbie's Marina runs a ferry Fridays through Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m., and they rent kayaks too: it's about an hour's paddle from the marina. The park runs Thursday through Monday, and admission is a couple of dollars a head.
Robbie's, at the north end of Lower Matecumbe, is the launch point for both islands. If you paddle, you paddle from there rather than from our beach. Our kayaks ride fine on a roof rack, and plenty of guests have done exactly that.

Two parks you can reach by car
For dry land, Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is the one worth your morning. Around MM 85, three loop trails run a bit over a mile through a fossilized reef, hardwood hammock and mangrove fringe. The quarry walls are the point: this coral rock was cut here and sold to the Florida East Coast Railroad to build Flagler's Overseas Railroad in the early 1900s, and you can read the fossil structure in the cut faces like a cross-section. Open 8 to 5, Thursday through Monday, a couple of dollars per person.
The Florida Keys History & Discovery Center sits at 82100 Overseas Highway, at the Islander Resort, which puts it close to the house. Indoor, air-conditioned, and the right call for an afternoon when the wind is up and nobody wants to be on the water. Call ahead on (305) 922-2237 to confirm the day's hours.
Other names you'll hear around here: Anne's Beach down on Lower Matecumbe, Founders Park, and Green Turtle Hammock Nature Preserve, which the Village runs guided walks through from time to time.
How the house is laid out, and why that matters with eight people
The Oasis is two buildings on 2.75 acres of oceanfront, with 200 feet of sandy beach and a gated entrance off the highway. The split is the useful part:
- Main house: one king bedroom with a Tempurpedic adjustable bed, 1.5 baths, full kitchen, and a wrap-around porch. This is where the coffee happens at sunrise.
- Guest house: two bedrooms (a queen and a queen/full), one bath, its own full kitchen, and an ocean-view living room.
Three bedrooms, four beds, sleeps eight, three and a half baths between the two. Two separate kitchens means two families can keep different schedules without negotiating the refrigerator, which is more valuable on a week-long trip than another bedroom would be. There's a fireplace in the main house, a BBQ area outside, and the pool is heated saltwater, infinity edge, facing nothing but Atlantic. Alligator Reef Light stands out there on the horizon, and on a clear night you can pick out its flash.
Over a hundred palms on the property, sixty-odd lit after dark. Dogs are welcome for a $350 fee, and the yard is fenced and grassy, which solves the problem that usually makes people leave the dog at home.
Days you can plan without starting the car
Six good bikes live here, which is the amenity guests mention most in reviews and the one that changes how a week feels. Upper Matecumbe is flat, compact and built around a single highway, so the bikes get used for dinner more than exercise. Italian Food Company and Bayside Gourmet are both within reach of the gate, along with local breweries and a run of art galleries. Publix is less than a mile off, which matters when you're feeding eight and have two kitchens to fill.
From the beach itself: swim, launch a kayak, take a paddleboard out early before the wind gets organised. Dolphins pass offshore often enough that guests stop photographing them by day three. Fishing, snorkeling and dive charters leave from marinas nearby, and Alligator Reef is the local name people ask for.
What to sort out before you book
A few practical notes, since this is one house and not a catalogue:
- Dates. There's one Oasis, and it books out. Ask us early rather than late, and we'll tell you honestly what's open.
- The two houses book together. You're taking the whole estate, both buildings, the beach and the pool.
- State park logistics. Indian Key's kayak-only access and the Lignumvitae ferry schedule are the two things to confirm the week you travel. Call Robbie's for the ferry.
- Dogs. Welcome, with the fee noted above. Tell us about them when you book.
- EV. There's a Tesla charger and a NEMA 14-50 on site, which takes the range question off the table on a drive down from Miami.
Doli and Mark have been hosting here for more than twelve years, and the reviews run 5 stars across 126 and counting. Text us before you arrive with what you want to see and we'll tell you which day to do the islands and which day to let the wind blow itself out by the pool.
