Three bedrooms, open water: our Islamorada estate
If you want three bedrooms in Islamorada and you're here because of what's in the water, we have one home for you: The Oasis, a 3-bedroom oceanfront estate that sleeps eight. It sits on 2.75 acres with 200 feet of sandy beach on the Atlantic, and the reason it suits this particular trip is simple: the water is in the backyard, the kayaks and paddleboards are already there, and you don't have to drive anywhere to get in.
We're Doli and Mark, and we've been hosting in the Keys for more than twelve years. What follows is the honest shape of the place, so you can decide before you book rather than after you arrive.
Two houses, three bedrooms, and why that matters with eight people
The three bedrooms aren't under one roof. The main house holds a king bedroom with a Tempurpedic adjustable bed, a bath and a half, its own full kitchen, and a wrap-around porch. The guest house holds the other two bedrooms (a queen, and a queen/full), one bath, a second full kitchen, and a living room looking at the ocean. Four beds, eight guests, three and a half baths across the estate.
That split does real work for a group. Two families can share the property without sharing a coffee maker at seven in the morning. Grandparents take the main house and go to bed early while the rest of you are still at the pool. Nobody is negotiating bathroom time, which on a dive-and-snorkel trip, when everyone is rinsing off salt at the same hour, is worth more than an extra bedroom would be.
- Main house: king bedroom, 1.5 baths, full kitchen, wrap-around porch
- Guest house: two bedrooms, 1 bath, full kitchen, ocean-view living room
- Across both: 3 bedrooms, 4 beds, 3.5 baths, sleeps 8
What you can do from the beach before anyone starts the car
Four kayaks and two paddleboards live here, which is enough for most of a group to be on the water at once. You launch straight off your own sand. Morning is the time: the Atlantic in front of the property tends to lie down early, and that's when the shallows are clearest. Dolphins pass offshore. We won't promise you'll see them, because nobody can, but guests text us about it often enough that we stopped being surprised.
Out on the horizon you'll see Alligator Reef Light, which is the visual anchor of the whole property and a reminder of what's under the water out there. The charter boats that run fishing, snorkeling and diving trips leave from marinas close by, Bud N' Mary's at mile marker 79.8 on the ocean side among them, and the World Wide Sportsman bayside marina near MM 81.5 with the Islamorada Fish Company on site. Those are separate bookings you make yourself, not part of the stay.
Marine life you can see without a boat
Islamorada makes this easy, which is why families with younger kids do well here even when the dive trip is the headline.
- Robbie's of Islamorada, at MM 77.5. You buy a bucket of bait fish, hold one over the dock, and enormous tarpon come up out of the water for it. The Hungry Tarpon on site serves from 6:30am. Florida Keys Kayak runs rentals and guided paddles to Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key from the same marina, which is the eco-tour half of this trip if that's what you came for.
- Theater of the Sea, around MM 84.7, a marine mammal park with dolphins, sea lions and sea turtles in a natural lagoon. It's about ten minutes north of Robbie's.
- Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, where the quarry walls are old reef, and Founders Park and the Keys History & Discovery Center for the days when someone in the group has had enough sun.
The hours between the water
The heated saltwater infinity pool faces the Atlantic with nothing in the way, and it's where most groups end up by late afternoon. It's heated, which matters more in January than people expect. There's bocce and cornhole on the grass, and a barbecue area for the day somebody actually catches something.
Six good bikes come with the house, and Upper Matecumbe is flat and short enough that the bikes beat the car. You can ride to the Italian Food Company and Bayside Gourmet, to the local breweries and the art galleries along the highway, and Publix is less than a mile off. We keep the Wi-Fi strong across the whole estate, which is less about work than about eight people and a lot of devices at the end of a long day. There's a Tesla and NEMA 14-50 charger on site if you drove down electric.
Who this suits, and who it doesn't
Two families travelling together, a multi-generation group, or a set of friends diving the reef by day: all of those fit the layout well. Dogs are welcome for a fee, and the yard is fenced and grassy, so they can be off-lead while you're unpacking. The whole estate sits behind a gate, which means kids in swimsuits can move between the two houses, the pool and the beach without anyone tracking them.
It won't work if you need four separate bedrooms, and it won't work if you want everyone sleeping under one roof, because that's not how the property is built. If you're bringing a boat, write to us about what you're towing before you book rather than assuming, since dock access means different things depending on the vessel.
Across 126-plus reviews we've held 5 stars, and the reason is mostly the unglamorous part: we answer the phone, and we know which charter captain to call when the wind turns.
